My First DJ Experience: Trying Out Semi-Automated DJing with AI

Recently, I was asked to DJ at an event. Although I had no prior DJ experience, I decided to take the opportunity to see how AI could assist in the process. It felt like a good chance to explore the possibilities that AI could bring to the music industry.

Can AI Handle DJing?

First, I considered how AI could be utilized in DJing. In theory, AI has access to vast music databases and can analyze factors like tempo and genre to decide what to play next. However, when I actually tried it out, some challenges became apparent.

The Limitations of AI: The Difficulty of Meeting On-Site Requests

The role of a DJ is not just to play music but to read the atmosphere of the venue and choose tracks that match the audience's needs. This is where I found AI to be limited. For example, the tracks AI selected didn't always fit the mood of the moment. Especially when it comes to responding to requests or capturing the vibe of the crowd, you need to be deeply familiar with the music and understand its background and feel. This is something AI currently struggles with.

The Potential of Semi-Automated DJing

That said, AI wasn't without its merits. In fact, I realized that using AI in a semi-automated way could actually support the DJ's work. For example, AI could provide background information about tracks or artist profiles, which made my music introductions more engaging. The playlist and mix ideas suggested by AI were particularly helpful during the preparation phase.

The Path to Full Automation

It may be challenging to fully entrust DJing to AI at this point, but using AI in a semi-automated way can provide significant support. As AI continues to evolve and gains the ability to assess real-time conditions at the venue, more flexible and fully automated DJing might become a reality in the future.

Conclusion

Through this DJ experience, I recognized both the potential and limitations of AI. While AI is an excellent tool for leveraging background information and supporting technical aspects of DJing, it still faces challenges in reading the atmosphere and responding improvisationally. However, by using AI in a semi-automated way, even beginners can achieve smooth DJ performances, and I am optimistic about future developments.

Based on this experience, I’m eager to continue exploring DJing with the help of AI in the future.
